A heart-wrenching letter to Volkswagen India

Hi Volkswagen India,

This is a serious note that I have been thinking of writing since a while now. Let me start of by saying that I really appreciate your products and the way they feel all blood German. Which is why we trusted your brand to buy our first New car, POLO.

And it was exactly what we ordered, a sheer combination of everything a young buyer would expect from his car, quality, drive, mileage and most importantly the Feel. But one fine day it was ruined by what is called in car language as ‘Low Ground Clearance’. Apparently it had hit a bump created by craters on our extremely expensive toll stung roads. Having realized the hit, we immediately pulled the car to the side of the road for inspection. Turns out the oil sump had suffered and was leaking oil.

Good fellows that your service agents are, they immediately sent rescue and hit us with an expensive repairs bill. We seeked their advice on how to prevent such unfortunate event again, to which they said, that such accidents are quite high in frequency and the company has made a note of it and soon they would be increasing the height of the car tackle the issue.

Rest assured we walked out of the service centre some 2 years back, no call was received from the company or service centre, but being careful ever since we tried keeping the car on the most smooth roads.

Until now, that is, last week the car coughed to a halt without knowing any reason for the same. It was quite strange as it happened for the very first time. On inspection, we found a trace of oil spill along the road, giving us Goosebumps fearing the worst. Help did arrive and the inspection did reveal an engine seizure. The most terrible thing had happened and the cost to repair the same is around 2 lacs. The insurance firm says it’s due to negligence and it can’t be covered under any policy terms.

And this is where my dis-comfort is, how come a supremely engineered car give us no indications before it fails down. Worst still, is that the car didn’t even seem to have hit anything. The oil had drained out and the car refused to start. While cranking it on again, no warning signs came on.

On our second visit after the car being towed away, we discovered the problem along with the service advisor who was showing us the damage and the crack to the oil sump (second time), it was a small pebble that had got stuck between the protective casing and the oil sump. This small pebble seems to have hammered the oil sump open.

This all has made me question, whether really the cars are engineered to be as good as they seem to be? Or are they just another brand trying to sell products on its brand value. And one wouldn’t expect an ace company to overlook apparent and historically observed problem and still be unwilling to change anything about it.

The whole experience has drained the brand value for us and has left us in helpless situation where we don’t even know if repairing the car is a good option. After all what is the guarantee that the same thing won’t happen again?

This letter was written with an expectation of getting some guidance from you guys? Kindly help me make a wise decision.

Also am noting this letter to popular Car Magazines, being an ardent follower or Auto industry I somehow believe that they might help me in getting a direction.

Thanks, you ex-loyal and ex-brand influencer,
Swapnil Bodhe

  2. Hi.
My Name is Vicky> I have owned a Polo for more than a year now. I understand the concern of the low ground clearance issue of polo. When almost when my car was brand new I had taken the car for a trip and while turning on the ghats I could feel the discomfort as the car had low ground clearance. Hence had to adjust my driving accordingly.

I suggest you change your driving accordingly to the low ground clearance of the car. The story about the pebble damaging the car is strange. I m glad to hear your story. Would appreciate if you could post some pics off the damage so we could know where exactly to look. I hope VW fixes your problem. One thing I do understand that all showrooms charge you heavily so that they can cover charges for the Insurance companies. I have been in huge arguments with Ford showrooms with my previous car but all in vain. Best we can do is lodge complain against them in consumer court and hope for the best.

Hoping to see updates of your car.

    Regards
    Vicky

    1. Hi Amit,

Glad to hear from you. And you are bang on, on the driving style bit. So this wasnt the first time the ground clearance has hindered us, it had happened before, post which the driving style has completely been changed. and the car does city run for the most.

The pebble indeed was strange, will ask my brother to post pics of it if he has those. But what i dislike about this ordeal is that the company is not showing any signs of corrective measures.

thanks for your support, am also writing to editors of car mags, hoping to receive help from them too. Lets see where it goes from here.

      Thanks,
      Swapnil

  3. hmmm ... I hope you seriously consider the Maruti for your next car, not that I am a skeptic ... but these "Phoren" products are dumped into India without any proper validation since our judiciary system is lacking. Can you image what excitement it will give any product marketing person when he sees the population of India applicable to his sector!!!.

please do not discard this as a tirade from an old man or a frustrated looser, look at the Harley's, the shocks are not meant for the Indian roads neither the touring bikes have a large enough tank to hold more than 14 lts of GAS.

Yes sir .... Designed and Made in India is Made for India

    1. Shivshanker is right . I own Skoda Fabia and since 2 years I am frustrated with the kind of after sales service I get . Once In small accident my bumper was dsmaged to replace that my car was lying in showroom for 14 days ! And for similar kind of accident my Tata indigo was repaired and fitted with new bumper in 8 hours . If we go with some issue to showroom Skoda and VW service people say its design issue . Then what the hell you people made this cars with such flaws . All Skoda cars A/C compressor has to be replaced in 2 years . I prefer using my Indigo now a days .
My next car will be definately an Indian brand or Toyota . I have send numerous emails to Skoda but they don' t care to attend a small hatch back customer because it there are many new innocent and unaware customers coming in and buying there these junk cars every day considering it as German engineering marvels , Bullshit !

  4. I suggest you to drop a mail to President, VW India.. And immediately file a case with the Consumer Forum of your area.. (Court fee is not more than Rs. 2000).. Also file an application for "urgent hearing" so that your matter is heard at the earliest..
I sincerely hope that VW top brass in India will reply to your mail asap..
Being a VW Polo owner for over 3 years now, I've been a witness to the poor after sales service 2 years back when my Polo met with an accident.. However, the VW team is much more responsive now than 2-3 years back.. Even after-sales service has improved remarkably now..

    Regards,
    Sanyog

  5. Since how many days oil has been leaking from the sump? Or it happened all of a sudden in a single drive on interstate?

    1. Hi Pankaj,

It did happen all sudden, there were no leakages prior to it. Also on inspection the oil sump was seen as split wide open. So chances are, it might have just gushed out.

Sad part is that there were no warning signs which alerted us. The car doesn't have heat indicator or oil level indicator. These should have essentially stopped the engine before it seized.

      Regards,
      Swapnil

  6. I personally think, any car, German, American, Indian needs to be taken care of. They need to be driven in a civilized manner. Am not indicating that you drove the car bad but, you need to be careful. If the ground clearance of your car is low, you need to check if there is an engine guard at the bottom; if there isn't, you should ask for it; if they dont have it, you should tell the insurance folks and VW, that any under body damage will be their responsibility and take it in writing.

    I have driven 2 Skodas (Octavia & Laura) in the past 8 years; more than 2L kms. agreed they have their share of parts and service related issues;

The German and European cars are fantastic to drive; but we are dealing with Indian mindsets here - during driving, dealing with the service center and dealing with insurance companies

NO ONE WILL GIVE YOU ANYTHING FOR FREE

    1. Hey serial thriller,

I get what u are trying to say. But am guessing u haven't read the entire price which i wrote.
Am a fan of Skoda and Volkswagen cars myself, or was. But when u realise that its not your mistake for which you are being panelized, its not fair.
And it's not just me who is suffering, every polo owner is. If not now, probably some time soon.
Which is why I want to fight this battle. And not begging for things thrown at me for free, as you thought of it as.
      I hope u understand now.

      Regards,
      Swapnil

  8. Greetings..
This is the same thing which happened with me too..
My Polo in last three years have had 4 sump changes..
One with a total engine change as the oil drained off when driving within a time span of two months.
I would like to as some questions for which I never got an answer from Volkswagen.
Is there an oil level indicator in POLO, I have never seen it.
If the oil drains out shouldn't the engine just stop at a min oil level.
why does it run till the engine is ceased?
Is there a sensor which detects heat in the engine available, as when oil reduces the heat increases & the engine should stop at some heat level.
There were no answers from Volkswagen.

  9. Writing sili blog or facebook comment wont help you.
There is a CRM team in every workshop.
Just write a mail to them and cc customer.care@volkswagen.co.in.
They will definatly look after it.
Mine after sales experience is very good. I have vento 1.6 TDI.
Car is rocket. GC is the issue but only for mud flap.
I suffered only door noise problem it because of heavy door and singe beeding.
Just compare the vento door with verna/city/sx4 u will feel the difference.

Everytime i visit the workshop they fix it for free with top priority.

In my vento headlamp there was a fog layer found , they immediately replaced it for free.
My windshield cracked because of heavy sunlight they replaced it for free.

So follow the procedure rather then creeping.
    Cheers.

    1. Hi Shubanshu,

Glad that you mentioned the words silly and creepy. If you come to think of it, how else would you have read this? Obviously you would have found this blog somewhere to react. Unless I would have posted what i felt, how were i to connect with fellow members who have similar concerns. Also a small request to you would be to read my blog in entirety and not just skip read to the eventual, that is, if you have got time to read and contemplate.

You see, some fights require strength of numbers. And i get what you are saying about certain instances where in they have showed promptness and willingness to support. But the issue here is different, its not a petty issue, I am talking 2 lacs here and that too for none of my fault.

And for your information, i have written on the email id that you mentioned, long before u shared it and have also written to the brand managers who are now looking into it, due to my social voice.

So i appreciate your view and wouldn't be harsh to let you by using words like silly or creepy.

      thanks,
      Swapnil

  11. Toyota, Fiat and maruti are the cars which have good ground clearance. Honda, skoda, vw , does not have sufficient ground clearance which indian roads require.
